Located in the geographic center of South America, Bolivia is a biological treasure nestled between Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. Our tour begins in the tropical lowlands at Santa Cruz, and gradually ascends the high Andes, ultimately achieving an elevation of approximately 15,480 feet (4,720 meters). Acclimating to altitude as we progress, we traverse a broad spectrum of habitats ranging from Amazonian rain forest, rain-shadow desert, cloud forest, polylepis woodland, and ultimately Andean puna and moorlands above timberland. Naturally the scenery is spectacular. Our final full day of the tour we will visit Lake Titicaca, the largest fresh water lake in all South America, and still fed by glacial run-off from peaks with elevations in excess of 18,000 feet. With its rich diversity of habitats, this small landlocked country hosts over 1,300 species of birds, a full 40 percent of all the species found in South America. The tropical Amazonian portions of Bolivia have barely been studied, and the species list may be much more extensive. About 20 species are endemic, with three times that many represented by endemic races. Another hundred or so are endemic to the limited ecosystems that share a border with Bolivia. We invite you to join us on this unique birding adventure to the heart of South America.
